“We do need you to remain silent, but I’m sure we can work out a deal,” she said, stroking my hair.
My heart sped again at the sensual tones of her voice.
Her husband’s dark chuckle startled me. He moved to kneel in front of me, his hand closing over my calf. “I think I have something you will like.” With a smile, he kissed my knee.

This is an original story, chronicling how three of the characters of my upcoming novelette, The Vampire’s Gallery, met. What you missed can be found here. It’s part of Six Sentence Sunday. Click the link for more awesome stories!
Please note: This is set around 1 BC, and is light when it comes to historical accuracy. I mean, no one’s going to whip out some matches or a PSP, but there are probably details I’ll get wrong.

“We will not kill you,” Hewa said, giving the man to her husband. “Sit here.” She patted the bed beside her, her teeth showing in her smile.
I did, and she wrapped me in her arms. She breathed death into my face and stroked my hair as her husband finished the man off. My heart slowly calmed in her embrace.

I jumped into the room when a hand touched my shoulder. Jafari shut the door behind him, then joined his wife in feeding.
My heart pounded in my chest. Stop it, please stop it. If you keep making all that noise, they’ll hear you. It kept beating my chest, battering my breastbone.

Hewa raised her head, blood on her lips, the limp man in her arms.
We stared at one another for a minute.
“He tried to rob me.” The man convulsed, and her long elegant fingers gripped him tighter.
“And I was hungry.” Her graceful head bent back over him, and she was more beautiful than any queen as she took his throat in her mouth.

Whatever they were here to do, it was illegal. It was the only explanation for why they would stay here. Not that I cared. They pumped me for information and greased my palm. I personally cleaned their rooms at night, when they were gone. Anymore, I didn’t even bother to knock.

His hand touched mine and my skin tingled. Flecks of gold showed in his eyes. Opening my hand to see the coin he placed in it, it too was gold. There was nothing in this entire flea-ridden inn that was worth the coin in my hand. I put it in my purse, whispering to myself, “An honest man.” Maybe there was something worth gold here.

“Is there an explanation?” I asked after a minute of silence.

“Where we come from, no one would be foolish enough to attack us. Thank you for reminding us that we are in a great Roman city now.” His tone was bitter, but he removed his bracelets, and gestured for his wife to do the same. “You are an honest man, a rare thing. I’ll pay you now for our room.”

My face flushed red, and I opened the door to leave. Instead of fleecing them like the other innkeepers in the area, I try and help them, and thanks for thanks I receive a chorus of guffaws.

“Wait, I am sorry, Darius, that is your name? Please allow my husband and I to explain.”

The woman’s voice was as beautiful as her name, and I stayed, waiting for someone to speak.

The woman stared at the floor, and the man turned to her, dumbfounded.

I closed the man’s hand over his bag before he got any coins out and led them to my best room. Shutting the door behind us, I turned to the puzzled couple.

“Pardon my panic, but Jafari, you do not pull out your purse in the common room to show everyone how much money you have to steal. And take off all your gold, or you’ll end up in a ditch with your throats cut,” I said.

They started laughing. They were practically braying at me like donkeys after I had saved their lives.

“I am Jafari, and this is my wife Hewa. We will be staying in the city for a while.”

The woman bowed her head, her pink tongue flicking over her full lips.

Maybe tonight as they slept I could crawl in between them. Jafari opened his purse and I could see good Roman coins glinting inside. Focus Darius, your dick is not the most important thing in this room, all that money is.
